I just felt the need to lookup a former student of mine on facebook.  I had her when she was 13, at a theatre camp, and even then she was a little too precocious and a little too inappropriate for her own good.  I liked her, though, and she knew it, and we got a long.  She’s a rising high school junior now, I believe, and I felt compelled to look her up because I heard she just got out of...

so, this should probably be part of a longer post that is a variation on a theoretical conversation I’ve had with myself many times, defending the subgenre (though not the word or the associations) of late 90’s “emo”, but its not, so I digress… In the year 2000 (the year two-thous-AND!) I was a high school junior, and, like roughly 98% of high school juniors,...

Friends, I have asked this once before, but the time is drawing nigh.  There are less than 24 hours left in Moustacheathon 2011, and not only are we trying to raise as much money as we can, if I can raise another 38 dollars by tomorrow at 7 PM, a donor will match my earnings for the week, doubling the money.  I ask you now, to give all you can.  And if you can’t give, reblog.  And if ...

Dear Tumblr, As some of you may know.  I am currently growing a moustache for charity.  The charity is near and dear to mine, and some of our fellow friends (specifically theartistformerlyknownas lenore, gregtron, and neveralovelysoreal among others), hearts.  826CHI is a non-profit writing and tutoring center in chicago.  We serve students from over 150 Chicago public schools, and if ...

Chicago Code Episode 2 Number of major guest actors I knew personally: 1.  Greta, who was an intern at Chicago Shakes while I bartended there, who played the driver’s girlfriend and had a nice little interrogation scene.  Grats, Greta. Number of Cubs/Sox references: 2 (is he a fan of the great game of baseball, or is he a Cubby lover? okay. we get it.  dude is from the south side. ...

Is it weird that while I’ve never really thought about regular Ariel in that way, I’m incredibly attracted to Hipster Ariel?

Anyone else in Chicago watch the Chicago Code? Its pretty good, but theyre trying so hard to make it “THIS SHOW IS ABOUT CHICAGO”, which is cool, but they sort of defeat their own purpose by shooting in known locations.  Does the alderman really have an office in Northwestern’s Downtown school? And if not, why shoot right in front of the stained glass windows with the logo on...

I know this is nothing new, but watching Paul Ryan’s response to the SotU… It is amazing to me that two seemingly intelligent, supposedly well-intentioned groups of people can look at the same set of empirical data and come to ENTIRELY OPPOSITE CONCLUSIONS.  I mean, different philosophies are all well and good, and on social issues I understand the diametric opposition, but it seems...

David Simon responds to Baltimore police commissioner’s comments that The Wire was a damaging and misrepresenting look at his city. “Publicly, let me state that The Wire owes no apologies—at least not for its depiction of those portions of Baltimore where we set our story, for its address of economic and political priorities and urban poverty, for its discussion of the drug war...

Possible Spoiler Alert
Saw Black Swan last night with Gregtron and Lenore (Merry Christmas!).  We didn’t talk much about it afterwards, which i think was due to them being tired from traveling, the fact that I may have liked it a lot more than they did, and, on my end, I sometimes hesitate to talk to Lenore about things that I think can/will devolve into a feminist/male view argument (see: Mad Men).  She is one of...

Two last thoughts about It’s A Wonderful Life: 1) Jimmy Stewart yelling YAY! with his arms raised is pretty much the best thing ever 2) The gym at the beginning of the movie (the one that opens up to a swimming pool) is the gym at Beverly Hills High.  Affectionately known as the “Swim Gym”, it hosts Beverly Hills High’s basketball team, who play in the same league as my...

I feel like if you asked the average person what It’s A Wonderful Life is about (including me) they’d talk about Jimmy Stewart trying to kill himself and then seeing what life would be like without him.  And that’s clearly the crux of the movie, and what makes it special, and what is constantly emulated.  But upon this year’s xmas viewing, I realized that that part of the...

Hey, so, the two Rosencrantz and Guildenstern type characters are the Town Cop and the Taxi Driver, and their names are Bert and Ernie.  It’s a Wonderful Life clearly predates Sesame Street, and these two characters have a sweet and bumbling relationship (they sing to Mary and George on their “honeymoon” and then Ernie kiss Bert on the forehead,  for example).  Is it just a...

so.  about six weeks ago i was still in somewhat dire straits, financially, and I was cobbling together just enough teaching to make ends meet.  So when I saw a for-hire acting gig (which tend to pay the best, per hour, of all possible amateur acting gigs) I went for it, even though I’m not really acting anymore.  And even though the gig was as Santa at a private party.  On Christmas Eve.  I...
